Madurai Municipal Corporation

Madurai Municipal Corporation is the civic body that administers the social and welfare activities of Madurai. It is important to know that the municipality was constituted on 1st November 1866 with the main aim to regulate the election system in the city.

Basically, the municipality of Madurai administration consists of a legislative and an executive body. The government has appointed the city Mayor to look over the legislative body and the Chief Commissioner heads the executive body.

Madurai City Municipal Commissioner ensures to carry out all the functions of the Corporation  effectively. Added to this, the Municipal Corporation has councilors, members and 6 standing committees. These councilors are given the responsibility to inspect and solve the problems faced by the locals. Usually, the members of each committee are appointed by the Council through secret ballet system. There are number of committees in the municipal corporation such as Education committee, Work committee, Health committee, Town Planning committee, Tax & Finance committee and Appointment committee.

Each of the department in the corporation is headed by the Commissioner and they are specially designed for a particular purpose. Moreover, the City Commissioner is assisted by two executive engineers and assistant commissioners for the different sections. The accounts department is mainly responsible for the maintenance of drainage, water supply, payment of office staff, maintaining pension, gratuity accounts, etc. Headed by the Corporation officer, the general administration department ensures to look over the work related to endowments, welfare programmes, Kalyana Mandapams, Rest Houses and more.
