Madurai Gandhi Memorial Museum

Gandhi Memorial museum which was actually a palace of Rani Mangammal, was later renovated into a memorial museum for Mahatma Gandhi. Moreover, there are seven Gandhi museums (Gandhi Sanghralayas) in the country and this Madurai Gandhi Memorial Museum is one among the seven museums.  The major attraction of this museum is the presence of blood stained khadhi worn by M.K. Gandhi when he was gunned down by Nathuram Godse.

The museum gallery is divided into three sections. They are Relics and Replicas, Visual Biography of Mahatma Gandhi and India Fights for Freedom. Apart from these, there is also another gallery attached in the ground floor (i.e.) Philatelic Gallery on Gandhi. The first section of the gallery is India Fights for Freedom. This starts from the entrance section, which there are 265 illustrations exhibited in 30 panels at the Dubar Hall giving a picture of the past Indian Freedom Movement.  Here listing some of the tittles portrayed with the contents. The coming of the white men (1498), the challenge from Tamil Nadu (1795), wages of slavery, the first shot (1857), the birth of the Indian National Congress (1885), the limits of the constitutionalism (1909), on the eve of Independence, India becomes free (1947), etc.

Activities of Madurai Gandhi Museum

There are various activities takes place in Gandhi Museum. Some of the activities include Gandhi birthday celebration, lecture series, examination, summer course on histrionic talents, weekly inter-faith prayer, mobile exhibitions, summer training course, self employment course, yoga, pranayama and meditation classes, Hindi and Sanskrit courses and more. Yoga, self employment and Hindi and Sanskrit classes are conducted throughout the year. Moreover, on request special personal yoga classes can also be arranged as per the convenience of the tourists. Hindi and Sanskrit classes are conducted between 4.30-6.00 P.M everyday. You do not have to pay any fees or entry charge. All the courses conducted at Madurai Gandhi Museum are completely free. There is a limit of 40 persons who can enrol in each course. Interested tourists can contact the administration office that is located at the entrance of the museum.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated Madurai Gandhi museum in 1959 and right from that period there have been a number of famous personalities visiting this museum.  Some of the stalwarts include Jayaprakash Narayan, V.V. Giri, Zahir Hussain, and Miss Anitha Bose.

Museum Library

Library hall in Gandhi Museum is one of the biggest libraries in South India. The library hall is located at the northern section of the main museum building. There are 32,000 volumes of books including periodicals and volumes present in the library. If you are a serious book worm, then this library would remain as a best educational treat for your mind and soul. The library is open on all days. The major readers of this library include research scholars from foreign and Indian Universities. There is closed access system followed in this Gandhi Library hall.
