Tamil Nadu Prison Department houses eight central prisons in the cities of Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Madurai, Palayamkottai, Salem, Tiruchirapalli, Vellore and Pudukottai. Of all, the Madurai Central Prison is considered to be the oldest and popular prisons located in the Madurai district. This prison occupies 31 acres of land that has the capacity to accommodate 1252 prisoners easily. It is important to know that the Central Prison in Maduri offers a wide range of amenities for the prisoners such as medical care, clothing & bedding, recreation, sanitation and water supply facilities.

Jails in MaduraiIn order to provide legal assistance to the prisoners, the legal aid cell is established by the Tamil Nadu Legal Services Authority. The authorities of Madurai Central Prison ensure to offer medical care and special treatment for the prisoners affected by leprosy and other health disorders. If you are interested to visit any of the prisoners, then it is essential to apply to Superintendent of the Prison between the hours of 8.00 AM and 1.00 PM.

Further, the visitors can collect the application form from the Prison gate and drop the filled in application form in the drop box. The prisoners in the jail are served idli, vada, pongal, tea at reasonable prices. Few of the sources reveal that the convicts prepare the food by themselves and enjoy the meal with their fellow members.

Panel of Members

The Madurai Central Prison is treated as a Casual Prison where the prisoners of remand, under trials, and convicts reside in the place. The Government of Tamil Nadu has appointed a panel of members comprising secretary of district legal services authority and three advocates to check the overall management of the Madurai Central prison. Sub-Judge K. Venkataswami, S. Muthukumar, S.P. Paneerselvam and S.Sivakumar are some of the legal authorities who visited the remanded prisoners detained in different blocks. Few reports have estimated that the panel has received about 60 petitions from the inmates involved in various robbery and other offences during the past 6 months period.
