Madurai Bench of Madras High Court and Madurai District Court are the two important courts in Madurai. Moreover, the city holds few courts which are incorporated to adjudicate the legal disputes between the legal parties and carry out the administration with the rule of law.

Madurai Bench of Madras High Court

Courts un MaduraiThe Madras High Court is considered to be the senior court that is established in the year 1862. It is important to know that the High Court was formed by merging the Sudder Dewanny Adawlut and Supreme Court of Judicature at Madras. At present, the Madras High Court is headed by Chief Justice Rajesh Kumar Agarwal and the court has over 49 judges exercising civil, criminal, testamentary and admiralty jurisdiction. In order to support the people in solving various legal issues, the second bench of the Madras High Court has been established in Madurai.

Moreover, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr. Justice R.C. Lahoti, Hon’ble Minister of Law and Justice Mr. H.R. Bhardwaj on 24th July 2004. Further, the High Court Bench has jurisdiction over districts of Tirunelveli, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Tiruchirappalli, Karur, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga and so on. The four storied building holds a large number of departments and offices in the High Court Bench.

Madurai High Court BenchFurther, the total plinth area of the building is 15209sq.m which consists of visitor halls, 12 Court Halls, Steno Rooms, Chamber of Honorable Judges, rest room and toilet facilities. All the court halls and chambers have been fully air-conditioned and they have fixed cushion seats for the comfort of the judges. At the entrance of the court, you will find a statue of Mahatma Gandhi which symbolizes the sign of peace and harmony.

Madurai District Court

The Madurai District Court houses a number of complexes inside the court building and they are governed by the Government of South India. The complexes available in the Madurai District Court include Principal District Court, I Additional District Court, II Additional District Court, Labour Court, Family Court, Special Court for E.C. Act Cases, Mahila Court, District Munsif Court and more. Generally, the family court is convened to decide and make orders relating to the family issues like custody of children, divorce cases and so on. Each of the districts holds a separate Labour Court to clear the disputes of employment related matters and other problems.
